Local vigilantes in Niger State arrested two teenagers, Usman Umar (17) and Ahmad Umar (19), for stealing electrical cables

In Niger State, local vigilantes apprehended Usman Umar (17) and Ahmad Umar (19) for allegedly stealing electrical cables from a public power transformer.
The arrest occurred near Muhammadu Jauro Secondary School in Lapai Local Government Area, where the suspects were caught burning the cables to extract iron for sale. This incident highlights ongoing efforts to address petty crimes in the region.
Community and Authority Response
During interrogation, the suspects admitted the crime was not their first and revealed names of other individuals involved. Gen. S.U. Abdulkadir (Rtd), the Hakimin Takuti, confirmed the arrest and noted that the community is actively working to reduce such crimes.
He mentioned the suspects sold stolen scrap to dealers Bello and Awwal, known for trading in stolen goods. Community patrols by traditional leaders and security volunteers continue to maintain peace and protect assets.
Legal Proceedings
The suspects have been transferred to the Nigeria Police Force for further investigation and possible prosecution, ensuring a formal legal process follows the community action.
