Truck Crushed Three Students and Commercial Motorcyclist to Death in Oyo

On Tuesday morning, July 8, 2025, a tragic accident claimed the lives of three students from Prospect High School and a commercial motorcyclist in Oluyole Local Government Area, Oyo State.

The incident occurred along the Abanla–Idi-Ayunre road when a commercial truck, attempting to overtake another vehicle, collided with a motorcycle carrying the students. The truck driver fled the scene, leaving behind a devastating aftermath.

Details of the Accident

Eyewitnesses reported that the truck rammed into the motorcycle, instantly killing the motorcyclist and two students. The third student, rushed to a nearby hospital, was later pronounced dead. An anonymous witness told Punch Newspapers, “The truck fatally crushed the motorcycle carrying the three students, all at once. All of them, including the rider, are dead now.” The students, in their Junior Secondary School years, were on their way to school when the accident occurred.

Following the incident, grieving students took to the streets, blocking the road to demand justice and government intervention. They were joined by commercial motorcyclists and local residents, who condemned the frequent dangers posed by heavy-duty vehicles on the route.

Official Response

Council Chairman Akeem Olatunji rushed to the scene and confirmed the accident. Expressing profound grief, he stated, “This is one tragedy too many. I can only imagine what the parents and families of these future leaders are going through emotionally, psychologically, and physically right now.” He criticized the recklessness of some truck drivers and commercial motorcyclists, suggesting that adherence to traffic rules, such as passenger limits, could have prevented the tragedy.

Olatunji assured the victims’ families that the council would pursue justice relentlessly, vowing to track down the fleeing driver. To address road safety, he ordered the immediate construction of speed bumps along the route, emphasizing, “We must take firm steps to slow down these trailers and protect our people, especially schoolchildren.”
