Ghana’s judicial administration has entered a new chapter with the swearing-in of Musah Ahmed as the country’s 17th Judicial Secretary since the First Republic. The ceremony took place last Wednesday in the office of the acting Chief Justice, Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie, following Mr. Ahmed’s appointment by the President on the advice of the Judicial Council, in accordance with Article 148 of the 1992 Constitution.
Mr. Ahmed brings over 25 years of legal experience to the role, having built a distinguished career in private practice as the CEO of Ahmed Legal Consult. His expertise spans Maritime Law, Commercial Law, Constitutional Law, Land Law, and International Law. He has also provided legal advisory services to diplomatic missions and previously served as Vice-Chairman of the Hajj Board.
Beyond his legal practice, Mr. Ahmed is a founding member of the Legal Resources Centre, where he played a key role in expanding access to justice and strengthening institutional capacity. His academic credentials include an LLM in National Security Law from the University of Ghana, where he also earned his LLB with Honours in 1997. He was called to the Bar in 1999 after graduating from the Ghana School of Law, where he was recognized as the Best Student in Advocacy and Legal Ethics.
As a member of both the Ghana Bar Association and the American Bar Association, Mr. Ahmed’s appointment signals a blend of local insight and global perspective. His swearing-in comes at a time when the judiciary is under increasing pressure to modernize, uphold transparency, and reinforce public trust.
With his deep legal acumen and commitment to institutional reform, Musah Ahmed is expected to play a pivotal role in shaping the administrative backbone of Ghana’s judicial system.
