NMDPRA Reports Sharp Decline in Fuel Evacuation for June 2025

The Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) has announced a sharp drop in the nation’s fuel consumption for June 2025, recording total fuel evacuation at 1.44 billion litres.
This marks one of the lowest monthly figures in recent years, sparking discussions on the factors driving the decline.
While the NMDPRA did not give full details in its initial statement, industry experts suggest the reduction could be linked to:
• Rising pump prices following subsidy removal
• Increased use of alternative energy sources
• Declining consumer purchasing power
• Improved monitoring to curb fuel smuggling
In previous months, national fuel consumption consistently exceeded 1.6 billion litres. The June figures reflect a significant drop, raising questions about the broader economic and social impact of reduced fuel demand.
Lower fuel consumption can ease pressure on import volumes and foreign exchange, but it may also signal reduced commercial activity and a slowdown in transportation-dependent sectors.
The NMDPRA has assured stakeholders that the supply chain remains stable, with adequate fuel reserves to meet national demand.
