Okada Riders Association of Ghana (ORAG) raises concerns over unfair impoundment of motorbikes by Postal and Courier Service Regulatory Commission.
A statement sighted by thehubweb.com indicates a pressure mounted on the Postal and Courier Service Regulatory Commission to stop extorting monies from Okada Riders.
The release signed by the Okada Riders Association of Ghana (ORAG) through their National President, Mr. Michael Kofi Owusu also seek and update on the legalization process promised by the government.
Release is as follows..
For Immediate Release.
The Okada Riders Association of Ghana (ORAG) is shocked and disappointed by the recent impoundment of our members' motorbikes by the Postal and Courier Service Regulatory Commission.
We believe the action is unjustified, lucking transparency, and detrimental to our livelihoods.
As an Association, we are unaware of laws or regulations governing Okada Riders who transport packages on behalf of their costumers.
If that law exist, why have they not been enforced previously? Is this sudden crackdown a sabotage of the government promise to ligalize our businesses as made by H.E John Dramani Mahama?
We demand answers to the following questions
1. When did the laws and regulations governing Okada Riders come into existence, and why did the Commission not start implementing them from their introduction?
2. Why was there no education and awareness creation before enforcing these regulations?.
3. How were the spot fine and registration fees of 1,600 cedis calculated and where do these funds go?
Furthermore, we seek and update on the legalization process promised by the government specifically, we want to know.
The current status of the proposed amendment to the road traffic Act L I 2180 of 2012 to legalize Okada Operations.
We call on the Government to..
1. Provide immediate clarifications on laws and regulations governing Okada Riders.
2. Halt the harassment and impoundment of our members' motorbikes.
3. Engage in meaningful dialogue with our Association to Adrress concerns and find solutions.
We suspect political sabotage and urge the government to prioritize the welfare of Okada Riders.
We will continue to advocate for our rights and seek justice.
Signed.
Micheal Kofi Owusu
National President
Okada Riders Association of Ghana (ORAG)
