President John Dramani Mahama has launched Ghana’s ambitious 24-Hour Economy and Accelerated Export Development Programme, marking a bold shift in the country’s economic trajectory. Dubbed a “national reset,” the initiative is designed to unlock round-the-clock productivity across key sectors, fuel export growth, and generate over 1.7 million quality jobs.
At the launch event in Accra, Mahama emphasized that the programme transcends the idea of merely extending working hours. Instead, it presents a coherent, multi-sectoral transformation agenda, integrating agriculture, pharmaceuticals, manufacturing, logistics, infrastructure, and textiles into a harmonized export strategy. This marks a departure from political rhetoric towards measurable outcomes. “We reclaim our founder’s vision of a self-reliant, industrious and inclusive African nation,” he declared.
Central to the programme is Mahama’s pledge that government will facilitate, not dominate the economy. With $300–$400 million in seed funding earmarked by the state, the initiative aims to mobilize $4 billion in total investment, primarily sourced from commercial banks, development finance institutions (DFIs), and blended finance models. This approach is intended to ensure fiscal sustainability while boosting investor confidence.
The programme unfolds through a comprehensive framework of nine thematic policy documents, each addressing a vital economic pillar:
1.Grow24 - Agricultural productivity and food security
2.Make24 - Manufacturing and industrial growth
3.Build24 - Infrastructure expansion
4.Show24Creative economy and tourism
5.Connect24 - Logistics and supply chains
6.Fund24 - Inclusive finance access
7.Aspire24 - Human capital and education
8.Go24 - Governance and civic engagement
9.Overview - Integrated national strategy
At its core, the initiative is geared toward reducing import dependency and repositioning Ghana in regional and global export markets. It seeks to re-engineer economic productivity across time zones, ensuring Ghana operates as a truly 24-hour industrial ecosystem.
Mahama noted that implementation has already begun, and success hinges on the effective mobilization of public-private partnerships, strategic rollout mechanisms, and the engagement of every Ghanaian.
As Ghana embarks on this transformative journey, the spotlight will remain on whether the 24-Hour Economy can deliver the scale of innovation, inclusion, and competitiveness needed to reset the nation’s economic landscape.
