President Mahama Orders Evacuation of 300 Ghanaians from South Africa Following Xenophobic Attacks

President John Dramani Mahama has authorized the immediate evacuation of 300 Ghanaians from South Africa following renewed xenophobic attacks targeting foreign nationals. South Africa has experienced recurring xenophobic attacks targeting African migrants, with recent incidents in 2026 prompting international concern and diplomatic intervention.
Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa announced the directive on Tuesday evening, stressing that the government’s priority is the safety of its citizens abroad. The evacuees had previously registered with Ghana’s High Commission in Pretoria, seeking assistance as violence escalated.
“His Excellency John Mahama has granted presidential approval for the immediate evacuation of 300 Ghanaians in South Africa,” Ablakwa posted on X.
South Africa has faced recurring waves of xenophobic violence over the past decade, often directed at African migrants accused of “taking jobs” or “resources.” These attacks have led to deaths, injuries, and widespread fear among foreign communities. Ghanaian nationals have been among those affected in past incidents, prompting earlier evacuations in 2015 and 2019.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasized that the evacuation plan is part of a broader commitment to protect Ghanaians wherever they reside. Officials are coordinating with South African authorities and airlines to ensure safe passage for those returning home.
The latest violence has reignited debate across Africa about migration, economic inequality, and the responsibilities of governments to safeguard their citizens abroad. Ghana’s swift action reflects growing pressure on African leaders to respond decisively to xenophobia in South Africa. Analysts warn that unless root causes of xenophobia are addressed, such evacuations may become a recurring necessity.
