USMNT Coach Pochettino Clashes with Christian Pulisic Over Gold Cup Squad Snub
Mauricio Pochettino excludes Christian Pulisic from US friendlies, sparking debate. The coach insists players must follow team plans, not pick matches.

U.S. Men’s National Team (USMNT) head coach Mauricio Pochettino has issued a strong message to his players: no one chooses when they play.
The statement follows controversy over the exclusion of star forward Christian Pulisic from the squad for recent friendlies against Turkey and Switzerland.
Pulisic Asked to Skip Gold Cup
Pulisic—currently playing for AC Milan—offered to feature in the two friendlies but requested rest during the upcoming Gold Cup, citing a heavy workload. Since joining Milan from Chelsea in July 2023, the 26-year-old has played 118 games for club and country.
Despite his offer, Pochettino left him out entirely, drawing criticism from former US internationals Landon Donovan and Alexi Lalas.
Pulisic Responds: “I Respect the Decision”
Speaking to CBS Sports on Thursday, Pulisic acknowledged the coach's authority but admitted confusion:
"I respect the decision, but I don’t really understand it."
He also defended his commitment to the national team, saying those questioning his dedication were "out of line."
Pochettino Doubles Down: "Listen and Follow the Plan"
On Saturday, Pochettino made his stance clear:
“Players don’t need to understand the decision—they need to follow the plan.”
He emphasized that the coaching staff explained the reasoning to Pulisic and others but noted it's not his job to manage every player's personal circumstances.
“We’re building a team, not catering to individual preferences.”

Poor Results Add Pressure
The decision to drop Pulisic comes as the USMNT’s form continues to decline, with back-to-back friendly defeats:
-
2-1 to Turkey
-
4-0 to Switzerland
These mark four consecutive losses leading into their Gold Cup opener against Trinidad and Tobago on Sunday in San Jose.
What’s Next for the USMNT?
With the Gold Cup approaching, questions remain:
-
Will Pulisic return for the tournament?
-
Can Pochettino turn the tide after four straight defeats?
-
Is a rift forming between veterans and the new coaching philosophy?
The pressure is mounting, and the world will be watching on Sunday.
