“A Painful Goodbye”- Dr. Agyemang Mourns Ernest Kumi’s Sudden Death
Abuakwa South MP Remembers Late Akwatia MP as “Brother Beyond Politics”

Member of Parliament for Abuakwa South, Dr. Kingsley Agyemang, has paid a heartfelt tribute to his late colleague and close friend, Ernest Kumi, describing his sudden death as a deeply personal loss and a tragic moment for Ghana’s political community.
In an emotional message shared with the public, Dr. Agyemang recalled the depth of their friendship and camaraderie, forged through shared struggles as first-time MPs and sons of the Eastern Region. He revealed that just days before Kumi’s untimely passing, they had one of their routine, wide-ranging conversations.
“Just last Friday, we had one of our usual lengthy phone calls,” he wrote. “We spoke about everything — the NPP in the Eastern Region, our constituencies, frustrations in Parliament — nothing was off the table. And today, I am left in utter disbelief knowing that my brother is gone.”
Dr. Agyemang emphasised that their relationship went far beyond parliamentary politics. They considered NPP National Women’s Organiser, Maa Kate, as a shared mother figure, making their bond feel like family.
■ “He Truly Was My Brother”
The two shared a unique affection for each other’s constituencies, often teasing one another about Akwatia being the land of diamonds and Kyebi, the land of gold.
“Ernest was more than a colleague,” Dr. Agyemang noted. “He truly was my brother.”
He expressed shock and sleeplessness after receiving the devastating news, quoting Psalm 90:12 to remind others of life’s fragile nature. “Life indeed is fleeting,” he wrote, urging all to live wisely and support those left behind.
■ A Call for Lasting Support
Moving beyond tribute, Dr. Agyemang called on colleagues and the public to extend sustained support to Kumi’s young family.
“It would be a shame if, after all the loud weeping and glowing tributes, we each returned to our routines and allowed his memory to slip away,” he said. “May I be found faithful in supporting his young family, even in the busiest of seasons.”
He concluded by extending his deepest condolences to Kumi’s wife, children, the people of Akwatia, the NPP, and the entire nation, describing Kumi as “a promising servant of the people whose passion and potential were unmistakable.”
“Rest well, my brother. Rest well, Ernest,” Dr. Agyemang concluded.
The death of Ernest Kumi, MP for Akwatia, has shocked the political establishment, cutting short the career of a leader widely seen as one of the New Patriotic Party’s rising stars.
