Abbott Fires Back at Crockett in Heated Texas Voting Rights Debate

Republican Governor Greg Abbott of Texas took aim at Democratic Rep. Jasmine Crockett on Sunday, dismissing her claims that the state’s recent redistricting efforts are designed to silence minority voters.
Speaking during an appearance on Fox News, Abbott responded to Crockett’s argument with a tone many have described as mocking, suggesting that the redistricting plan is both constitutional and fair.
“Her comments are just political theater,” Abbott said. “Texas draws maps according to the law, not according to partisan whining.”
Crockett, a vocal critic of the redistricting, has argued that the new district boundaries intentionally weaken the political influence of Black and Hispanic communities across Texas. She maintains that the changes violate voting rights protections and threaten fair representation.
Voting rights advocates have sided with Crockett, pointing to ongoing lawsuits and data analyses that show minority-heavy districts being diluted in favor of Republican strongholds.
Abbott, however, framed the issue as a matter of political strategy, saying Democrats are using the courts and media to push narratives they can’t win at the ballot box.
The exchange comes amid heightened political tension in Texas, where both parties are gearing up for critical 2026 races, and debates over voting rights remain a central flashpoint.
