New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential aspirant and 2024 flagbearer, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has criticised former President John Dramani Mahama for what he described as double standards in attributing Ghana’s economic challenges to global factors.

Speaking during his campaign tour of the Eastern Region, Dr Bawumia recalled that the NPP government had consistently explained the country’s economic downturn from 2022 as the result of external shocks, particularly the COVID-19 pandemic and the Russia–Ukraine war.

According to him, Mr Mahama rejected this explanation during the 2024 election campaign, arguing instead that mismanagement was to blame. However, Dr Bawumia pointed out that in a recent address in New York, the former president acknowledged that prices of goods and services had risen across Africa due to the pandemic, which had reversed over a decade of poverty reduction gains.

“This shows he knew the truth, but he didn’t say the same during the election period,” Dr Bawumia told party supporters.

The former Vice President insisted that unlike the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), the NPP had been transparent in outlining the real causes of the crisis. He further expressed optimism that Ghanaians would recognise this and reward the governing party at the polls.

“By God’s grace, we will all see the truth, and I believe the NPP will be voted for in 2028 to bring economic development,” he said.

Dr Bawumia is currently touring communities in the Eastern Region, aiming to consolidate grassroots support and rally the party base as the NPP positions itself for the next election cycle.
