Global gold rankings: China, Russia, Australia dominate while Ghana leads Africa
China Leads World in Gold Production as Ghana Tops Africa

China has reaffirmed its position as the world’s leading gold producer, according to new figures from the World Gold Council. The Asian powerhouse mined 380 tonnes of gold, placing it far ahead of other nations.
Russia followed in second place with 330 tonnes, while Australia secured third with 284 tonnes, underscoring the two countries’ continued dominance in the global gold industry.
In Africa, Ghana emerged as the continent’s top producer, recording 141 tonnes. This performance saw Ghana maintain its lead over traditional rivals South Africa and Mali, cementing its reputation as a major player in the global mining sector.
The data highlights shifting dynamics in gold production worldwide. While China’s supremacy has remained consistent, Ghana’s rise reflects both sustained investment in mining and the country’s favourable geology. Analysts note that regulatory reforms and international partnerships have also contributed to boosting Ghana’s output in recent years.
Gold continues to be a vital commodity for global markets, serving as both a safe-haven asset in times of uncertainty and a critical resource for national economies. For Ghana, the sector represents a key source of foreign exchange and government revenue, though it also raises challenges around environmental sustainability and artisanal mining practices.
The World Gold Council’s figures underline the strategic importance of gold across continents, with production concentrated in a handful of countries that exert significant influence over supply trends.
