Lumba’s 1 week ceremony taken to Independence Square - Family
Ban on noise-making and drumming compels organisers to move the event to Independence Square

The bereaved family and management of deceased legendary highlife icon Charles Kwadwo Fosu, popularly known as Daddy Lumba, have disclosed a last-minute change to the venue for his one-week observance.
The ceremony, still scheduled for today, Saturday, August 30, 2025, has been relocated to Black Star Square (Independence Square) in Accra, where a candlelight vigil held in his honour also occurred weeks ago.
Originally planned for the University of Ghana Stadium, the observance was shifted following an official reminder from the La State Council.
At a press briefing yesterday in Accra, council personnel mentioned that effective Monday, August 11, 2025, noise-making in the La Traditional Area is banned until September 5, 2025.
However, the original venue fell within that enclave. The personnel suggested that the family consider postponing or changing the function.
Instead of adjournment, Daddy Lumba’s team chose to change the initial venue. In an official communique, they assured enthusiats and sympathizers that the date remains unchanged but noted the change in venue.
“We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this change may cause and appreciate your understanding,” the communique indicated.
The family formally paid a visit to the seat of government to inform the presidency about the death and funeral arrangements of the legendary highlife crooner. At the Office of the President (Jubilee House) - the Chief of Staff, Julius Debrah, together with senior officials including the Director of Diaspora Affairs Office of the President, Kofi Okyere Darko (KOD), received the Parkoso Ekoɔna Ebusua and the Fosu Family of the late music legend Charles Kwadwo Fosu, affectionately known as Daddy Lumba.
On behalf of H.E. President John Dramani Mahama and the Presidency, the Chief of Staff, expressed condolences to the family and paid tribute to Daddy Lumba’s monumental contribution to Ghana’s music, culture, and heritage.
Further engagements will continue as the government works with the family and stakeholders to celebrate the extraordinary life and enduring legacy of one of Ghana’s greatest musical icons.
