President John Dramani Mahama has, with immediate effect, removed Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkonoo from office in line with Article 146(9) of the 1992 Constitution.

The decision follows the submission of a report by a committee constituted under Article 146(6) to investigate allegations of stated misbehaviour against the Chief Justice. The petition, filed by Ghanaian citizen Mr Daniel Ofori, was duly considered by the committee, which examined the petition and accompanying evidence.

In its findings, the committee concluded that the grounds of stated misbehaviour under Article 146(1) had been established. Based on this, the committee recommended the removal of Justice Torkonoo from office, a recommendation the President is constitutionally required to act upon.

A statement issued on Monday, 1st September 2025, and signed by Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Spokesperson to the President and Minister for Government Communications, confirmed the development.

“President John Dramani Mahama has, in accordance with Article 146(9) of the 1992 Constitution, removed the Chief Justice, Her Ladyship Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkonoo, from office with immediate effect,” the release said.

This marks a historic decision in Ghana’s judiciary, as the President enforces constitutional provisions relating to accountability and judicial conduct at the highest level.
