Former Vice President and flagbearer of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the 2024 elections, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has urged the Economic and organize crime office (EOCO) to respect the rights of detained Ashanti Regional Chairman of party, Bernard Antwi Boasiako who is currently on admission.

According to the former Vice President, he is worried about the continuous detention of Chairman Wontumi by EOCO especially when charges preferd against him are vague. 

He also indicated that, he has been in constant contact with the lawyers of Chairman Wontumi since morning and commended them for their handling of the case. 

He expressed worry about attempt by EOCO to infringe on the rights of Chairman Wontumi despite the fact that, his crime is yet to be known. 

He therefore urged the Economic and organize crime office (EOCO) and other state institutions to respect the rights of Chairman and any other Ghanaian despite their political affiliations.

The Ashanti Regional Chairman was arrested by officials of EOCO on Tuesday, minutes after he was granted bail by the police CID after honouring invitation by the police CID. 

He was rushed to the hospital during interrogation at the EOCO headquarters as he felt unwell. This was confirmed by his lawyer, Andy Appiah-Kubi. 

Lawyer Appiah-Kubi stated that, Chairman Wontumi will continue his interrogation at EOCO if he gets better.
