A woman has tragically died after falling into a 170-foot well at a construction site in the Ijegun area of Lagos State.

The incident occurred on Abuba Anthony Street, near Obalagbe Bus Stop and close to Fadeko International Hotel.

Maria Fadairo, Senior Public Affairs Officer of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, confirmed the development in a statement issued on Friday, July 11, 2025. According to her, the Service received a distress call around 7:34 p.m. on Monday, June 30.

Responders from the Ejigbo Fire Station arrived at the scene to discover that a woman had fallen into a deep, uncovered well situated in front of an uncompleted one-storey building consisting of six two-bedroom flats on a fenced 648-square-metre plot.

Due to the depth and complexity of the recovery, a multi-agency operation was launched. After several days of intensive efforts, the woman’s body was recovered on Thursday, July 10.

The operation was led by the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service in collaboration with the Nigerian Police, Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS), the State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit (SEHMU), and other emergency responders.

"The victim was recovered deceased and handed over to SEHMU officials, with LASAMBUS on standby while the Nigeria Police observed the procedure,” the statement read.

Director of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Margaret Adeseye, extended heartfelt condolences to the victim’s family, commending the dedication of all the agencies involved in the recovery effort.

“We express our deepest sympathies to the family of the deceased and thank all partners for their professionalism and commitment,” she stated.

Adeseye further stressed the critical need for safety at construction sites, warning that "a 170-foot uncovered well is an extreme hazard that should never be left unsecured.”

The State Criminal Investigation Department, Panti, has taken over further investigation into the incident.
