In a bid to curb the rising trend of Britons travelling abroad for cosmetic procedures, the UK government has launched a campaign in partnership with TikTok influencers to raise awareness about the risks involved.
Campaign Goals
Educate the public on the dangers of overseas treatments like hair transplants, dental work, and Brazilian butt lifts.
Encourage safer choices by urging individuals to consult UK-based doctors before booking procedures abroad.
Reduce NHS burden from complications arising from botched surgeries performed overseas.
Medical influencers such as Midwife Marley and Doc Tally will produce TikTok videos that:
Highlight real-life complications
Share safety checklists (e.g., verifying surgeon credentials, clinic regulations, and aftercare plans)
Warn against package holidays that bundle cosmetic procedures.
Health Minister Karin Smyth stated: “Too many people are being left with life-altering injuries after going abroad for medical procedures, without access to proper advice or safeguards.”
Foreign Office Minister Stephen Doughty added: “Informed choices today can help avoid serious complications tomorrow.”
The campaign complements broader reforms, including:
Licensing requirements for Botox and filler clinics
Age restrictions to protect minors from social media-driven beauty trends
Sanctions for unqualified practitioners
