Ashanti Kingdom Bids Farewell to Mamponghene Daasebre Osei Bonsu II

Mampong, Ashanti Region — Thousands of mourners converged in Mampong last Saturday, June 8, for the traditional burial rites of the late Asante Mamponghene, Daasebre Osei Bonsu II, in a ceremony marked by solemnity, culture, and royal dignity.
The late Mamponghene, a revered traditional ruler and a key figure within the Asante Kingdom, was laid to rest following a series of elaborate rites deeply rooted in Akan custom. As Nifahene of the Ashanti Kingdom — the right-hand of the Asantehene — Daasebre Osei Bonsu II played a central role in traditional governance and national development.
The burial ceremonies drew a wide array of mourners, including chiefs and queen mothers from across the country, government officials, diplomats, and ordinary citizens, all gathered to honor a man widely praised for his wisdom, humility, and commitment to his people.
Mampong was draped in red and black, the traditional mourning colors of the Ashanti, as residents and visitors alike paid tribute. The rites included the symbolic Doteyie (lying-in-state), traditional drumming, Adowa and Kete dances, and a royal procession led by the Mampong Traditional Council.
Palace linguists and spiritual leaders conducted sacred rituals to ensure a smooth transition of the late chief’s spirit to the ancestral realm. A 21-gun salute was fired in his honor, underscoring his esteemed position within the Ashanti hierarchy.
Born and raised in the Ashanti Region, Daasebre Osei Bonsu II served as Mamponghene for several decades and was known for his advocacy for education, culture, and community development. Under his leadership, the Mampong Traditional Area experienced notable growth in infrastructure, healthcare, and youth empowerment.
In a tribute delivered at the funeral, a representative of His Majesty Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, Asantehene, described the late chief as a "pillar of unity and wisdom whose service to the kingdom was invaluable."
Following tradition, the Mampong Stool will remain vacant during a mourning period, after which the selection and enstoolment of a new Mamponghene will commence.
The passing of Daasebre Osei Bonsu II marks the end of a remarkable chapter in Ashanti history and leaves behind a lasting legacy of leadership, tradition, and service.
