Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum Declares Presidential Ambition Ahead of NPP’s 2028 Flagbearer Race

Former Minister for Education and Member of Parliament for Bosomtwe, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, has officially declared his intention to contest for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearership ahead of the 2028 general elections.

In a statement posted on his verified Facebook page on Wednesday, Dr. Adutwum said he is ready to run for the leadership position once the party opens nominations.

“With humility, conviction, and a resolute heart, I, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, declare my intent to run for the flagbearership of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), should nominations be officially opened by the party,” he stated.

■ A New Contender Enters the Ring

Dr. Adutwum, known for his technocratic leadership and sweeping reforms in Ghana’s education sector, is now turning his attention to national leadership, positioning himself as a candidate of vision, transformation, and innovation.

His declaration adds momentum to what is shaping up to be a high-stakes race within the NPP, as the party gears up to choose a new standard bearer after the 2024 election cycle.

Competition Heats Up

The former minister joins a list of prominent NPP figures believed to be eyeing the position, including 2024 presidential candidate Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, outspoken lawmaker Kennedy Agyapong, and current Minister for Agriculture Bryan Acheampong.

The NPP’s National Council recently confirmed January 31, 2026, as the date for the party’s presidential primaries, a key moment that will shape the party’s future and its strategy for reclaiming or retaining power in 2028.

■ A Platform Built on Policy

Dr. Adutwum’s tenure at the Ministry of Education was marked by transformational policies in STEM education, free SHS reforms, and infrastructure expansion, gaining him respect both within and outside party lines.

Political analysts say his technocratic appeal and emphasis on education may resonate with a segment of the NPP's base looking for fresh leadership with a proven record of public sector performance.

As the race intensifies in the coming months, all eyes will be on how Dr. Adutwum builds his campaign machinery and navigates the political terrain of a party balancing legacy, loyalty, and the appetite for new direction.
