Ghanaian Member of Parliament Arrested in Netherlands Over US$32m FBI‑Linked Case

Independent Member of Parliament for Asante Akim North, Ohene Kwame Frimpong, has been arrested in the Netherlands in connection with an FBI‑linked investigation into alleged financial crimes.

Parliament confirmed the arrest in a statement signed by Clerk Ebenezer Ahumah Djietror, noting that Frimpong was detained at Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam over the weekend.

According to preliminary reports, the case involves alleged money laundering and romance scams estimated at US$32 million. The investigation is said to be coordinated by the United States Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) in collaboration with European authorities.

Speaker Alban Bagbin and parliamentary leadership have initiated contact with Ghana’s Mission in The Hague to gather details. Parliament assured the public that updates will be provided as more information becomes available.

Frimpong, an entrepreneur and philanthropist, entered Parliament in January 2025 after defeating incumbent Andy Kwame Appiah Kubi. His arrest has sparked debate about vetting processes for parliamentary candidates and the broader issue of financial crime among public officials.
