President Mahama Announces Accra-Kumasi Expressway Project Set to Begin in Early 2026
President John Mahama has officially announced the upcoming construction of a new Accra-Kumasi Expressway, with sod-cutting scheduled for early 2026.

President John Dramani Mahama has unveiled ambitious plans for the construction of a new Accra-Kumasi Expressway, a transformative infrastructure initiative set to reshape Ghana’s transportation landscape. The announcement came during a courtesy call by the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, at the Jubilee House in Accra.
President Mahama disclosed that feasibility studies and design work are set to begin immediately, with the sod-cutting ceremony expected in early 2026. The project forms part of the government’s bold “Big Push” infrastructure agenda, aimed at delivering accelerated national development through strategic investments.
“This expressway will reduce travel time, improve road safety, and boost commerce between Accra and Kumasi,” President Mahama said.
Ashanti Region to Receive Multiple Infrastructure Projects
Alongside the expressway project, President Mahama also outlined additional infrastructure developments earmarked for the Ashanti Region, including:
-
Phase 2 of the Kejetia Market project
-
Construction of the Kumasi Outer Ring Road to ease inner-city congestion
-
Extension of Prempeh International Airport’s runway to accommodate larger aircraft
-
Completion of the Suame Interchange and its auxiliary bridges
These initiatives are designed to decongest urban areas, improve logistics, and expand the region’s economic base.

He noted that their joint efforts led to significant strides in roads, health infrastructure, education, and clean water delivery across the Ashanti Region.
The Asantehene commended the President’s renewed focus on development and advised him to govern with both humility and courage.
A New Era for Ghana's Infrastructure
The upcoming Accra-Kumasi Expressway is expected to be one of the most significant transportation investments in Ghana's history, enhancing connectivity between the nation’s two largest cities and fostering regional integration and economic opportunity.
This project, once completed, will not only ease traffic and reduce travel costs but also position Ghana as a critical logistics hub within West Africa.
