Reps Question ₦1.06tr NG-CARES Spending After Complaints of Minimal Impact

The House of Representatives Committee on the Nigeria COVID-19 Action Recovery and Economic Stimulus (NG-CARES) programme has launched an investigation into the ₦1.06 trillion initiative, following widespread public concerns about its effectiveness.

The NG-CARES programme was designed to provide economic relief to vulnerable households and small businesses affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, while also supporting state governments in recovery efforts. However, lawmakers say there are growing complaints that the scheme has failed to deliver tangible benefits to its intended beneficiaries.

Speaking at the committee session, members of the House expressed dissatisfaction with the reported execution of the programme, citing allegations of mismanagement, lack of transparency, and failure to reach the most affected communities.

The probe aims to:

 • Assess how the ₦1.06 trillion fund was allocated and spent

 • Determine if the programme met its stated goals

 • Hold responsible parties accountable for any lapses or misuse of funds

The investigation comes amid rising calls from civil society organizations and economic analysts for a full audit of COVID-19 relief funds in Nigeria.

As the probe continues, the committee has pledged to ensure that every kobo is accounted for and that future intervention programmes are implemented with greater transparency and measurable impact.
