Apapa, Lagos in a terrifying close call that could have ended in tragedy, a large container fell off a moving trailer right in the heart of Apapa, Lagos, causing panic, traffic chaos, and renewed concerns over road safety in one of Nigeria’s busiest commercial hubs.

The incident, which occurred on a major access route near the port axis, was caught on video and has since gone viral on social media, with many viewers describing the scene as “heart-stopping” and “a miracle that no life was lost.”

In the viral clip, traffic appears to be moving slowly as trailers navigate the notoriously congested Apapa roads. Suddenly, the container atop one of the trailers tilts dangerously and crashes to the ground with a deafening thud, barely missing a nearby commercial bus and street hawkers.

Screams erupt in the background as bystanders flee the scene. Miraculously, no fatalities have been reported at the time of this writing, but eyewitnesses say the situation could have easily turned deadly.

“This Could’ve Been Me” — Eyewitnesses Speak

I was standing just a few feet away, trying to sell bottled water,” said Mary, a 22-year-old roadside vendor. “I don’t even know how I ran. God saved me today.”

A commercial bus driver who narrowly avoided the falling container added: “These trailers are disasters waiting to happen. Who checks if the containers are properly secured?”

Apapa has long been plagued by trailer gridlock, poor road conditions, and unregulated haulage operations. Despite several government interventions and task force efforts, incidents like this continue to threaten lives daily.

According to data from the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), container-related accidents have increased by over 18% in Lagos alone in the last year, with Apapa being a primary hotspot.

As pressure mounts, the Lagos State Government and relevant agencies are being urged to enforce stricter safety checks for trailers and hold owners accountable for poorly secured cargo.

For now, residents are counting their blessings and bracing for what tomorrow’s commute might bring.
