Sammy Gyamfi Sues Afia Schwarzenegger for Defamation

Chief Executive Officer of Goldbod and prominent NDC politician, Mr. Sammy Gyamfi, has filed a defamation lawsuit against media personality Afia Schwarzenegger over what he describes as a “false, malicious, and deliberately contrived” campaign to destroy his character.

The suit, lodged on Wednesday, July 23, seeks to set the record straight following a string of claims allegedly made by Ms Schwarzenegger, suggesting that Mr. Gyamfi had romantic relationships with students at the University of Ghana and had purchased cars and property for them.

In a formal statement, Mr. Gyamfi dismissed the allegations as entirely baseless. “I have no girlfriend(s) at the University of Ghana and have not at any time purchased vehicles for any so-called girlfriends as claimed by Defendant,” he declared.

He further refuted accusations that he had bought property in the United States or anywhere else for his wife or a sister-in-law, adding that his wife does not even have a sister named “Vida”—a key figure referenced in the alleged publications.

Mr. Gyamfi argued that the statements were either made deliberately or with “unpardonably reckless disregard for the truth.” He asserted that the intent was to paint him as “morally depraved and without any scruples,” in a calculated move to inflict reputational damage.

The consequences, he said, have been far-reaching. Since the allegations surfaced, Mr. Gyamfi has reportedly received a flurry of calls and messages from associates, senior officials at the Presidency, party members, family, and friends—both within Ghana and abroad—seeking clarification.

He maintains that the legal action is not just about personal vindication, but also to send a clear message about accountability and responsible public commentary.

“I am pursuing this not only to protect my name but to deter similar reckless attacks on public figures in the future,” Mr. Gyamfi stated.

The case reignites the national conversation on responsible speech in media spaces, especially as tensions rise around how public personalities are portrayed and criticised in Ghana’s increasingly digital and polarised media environment.
