SERAC: Oguta Port Could Transform Maritime Sector, Generate Millions of Jobs

The Sea Empowerment and Research Centre (SERAC) has revealed that the ongoing Oguta River Port project in Imo State has the capacity to transform Nigeria’s maritime sector by handling over 35% of the country’s marine trade.
Speaking at a maritime development forum, SERAC representatives highlighted the port’s strategic location along the Oguta Lake and its link to the Atlantic Ocean, noting that it could serve as a major gateway for cargo movement in the South-East and beyond.
The group projected that the port’s full operation could create over 2 million direct and indirect jobs, boosting economic activity, trade competitiveness, and industrial growth in the region.
“Oguta River Port has the potential to decongest Lagos ports, reduce logistics costs, and stimulate massive employment opportunities,” SERAC stated.
The project, being developed in collaboration with the Imo State Government and federal authorities, is expected to attract both local and foreign investments. Industry experts say its success could position Nigeria as a stronger player in the global maritime trade network.
However, SERAC stressed the need for timely completion, proper infrastructure development, and strict adherence to environmental standards to maximize the port’s economic impact.
